The family of Derrick Stevens, 78, have paid heartfelt tribute to a beloved husband, father, and friend following the tragic road collision that claimed his life near Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire.
According to Lancashire Police, the collision occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, on Hall Lane. Investigators believe Derrick was driving his Volkswagen Golf when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle failed to negotiate a bend, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided head-on with a lorry.
Derrick suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. His passenger, 61-year-old Anita Ashcroft, also tragically lost her life in the collision. The lorry driver was not injured and is assisting police as a witness.
In a moving tribute, Derrick’s family described him as a loving, caring, and exceptionally generous man whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met. They said he had an easygoing nature and could strike up a conversation with anyone, leaving a lasting impression through his humor and genuine interest in others.
Derrick had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending time walking with friends, often ending hikes with a cup of tea or a meal at a local pub. An enthusiastic birdwatcher, he regularly visited Martin Mere and delighted in spotting unusual birds from his own garden. The Lake District held a special place in his heart, and he had recently returned from a hiking holiday filled with stories of scenic trails, welcoming people, and memorable experiences.
His family said his quick wit and infectious sense of humor will be greatly missed by his loved ones, including Kristofer, Linda, Nicola, Jacqueline, and his many friends. They also extended their sincere condolences to the family of Anita Ashcroft during this time of shared grief.
Lancashire Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage to come forward as inquiries remain ongoing.
